About Me
My name is Richard Clinton. I am Board Certified Christian Counselor and hold a Masters in Professional Counseling through Liberty University. I work primarily with men but will also work with women. I also will work with married couples and provide pre-marital counseling. My focus in counseling is looking at your story. I’ve heard Dr. Dan Allender say that we process things, not only, cognitively, but also narratively, and that our whole life is told through story. I have learned that in that story we suffer wounds that influence how we live and see the world and even how we see God. Helping you make sense of your story, including discovering areas of wounding and false agreements, resulting sin patterns, and helping to orient you to the truth of your identity, and inviting Jesus into those spaces to seek his healing, is my area of passion.
A little bit about me. I have been married to my beautiful bride and high school sweetheart, Amber, since 1997. Together we have been blessed to bring 3 amazing kids into this world. Our middle son, Brandon, went home to Jesus in 2024, and our other kids, Shawn and Ashley are grownup and starting their lives. My family has always been the joy of my life and getting to spend time with them has always been important.
My journey into counseling has been 10 years in the making. I came to faith in Jesus in January 2015 and later that year felt led to go back to school. After completing Masters Counseling in 2017, I entered the world of men’s ministry, running a weekend called The Anvil and later partnered with other ministries, including my good friends at Zoweh Ministries in Durham, NC and many others. The door to enter vocational counseling never seemed to open and later I realized why.
God has been leading me through a season of refining and preparation in my personal life in recent years, including watching my wife going through 2 life threatening hospital stays and walking through the loss of our son, Brandon. Through those traumatic events and other times of struggle, it became evident that God was working in those times, in part, to help prepare me for a return to the world of counseling.
I have lived through enough and lived long enough to know that I do not have all the answers but I believe wholeheartedly that together and through the work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, there is freedom and healing to be found and promised hope for us all. I believe that our stories reveal critical data as to the way we operate in this life. Understanding those elements and how they effect the way we live and even why we respond the way we do, can help lead to greater freedom. I look forward to serving you.
